World trips and international travel have become so common; now that many such packages are available. A little research and one can easily find such packages offered at cheap tickets. Business, fun, studies; whatever the purpose be, when you go to a new country or a foreign country, you need to remember that there is a risk of contracting diseases. There are many diseases that don’t need much time to invade you.
Every year about 700 million people travel by air and all of them can become potential transport vehicle or the so called vectors of certain diseases. It’s not they alone who are in trouble but they can bring trouble to their own people who are back home. One has to take certain preventive measures to avoid getting sick when you go to a foreign country. Every traveler must bear this in mind.
Considering the accidental outbreaks that took place recently, health authorities all over the world have realized how important it is to take the preventive measures. With precautions and vaccinations before you leave your country you can protect yourself from getting sick. And with timely identification and treatment of the disease that you’ve carried along with you, you can save yourself and also many others who could have got sick because of you. One must be aware that this could lead to some serious public health issues.
If you are planning to leave the country in the near future, get an appointment with your doctor before 4-6 weeks of your departure date. The doctor might want to check
•Diseases or disorders you already suffer from.
•Your vaccination status and also the vaccination for the diseases that are prevalent in the country that you would visit.
•If you are allergic to any foods or meds.
•If you are at present being on some medication.
•If you have visited some places previously.
Risk factors vary from country to country. The food and water you would get in this new country may not be as good as what you drink back at your home. The altitude, temperature and other climatic conditions of that country can be a problem too. Certain parasites are more prevalent in some countries.STDs are more common in certain countries.
Reason for travel, hygiene of the place where you would stay, duration of stay, and the epidemics that are already in progress are certain things that can’t be ignored. If you are a pregnant woman or if you have small children or elderly people, they could be more vulnerable than others. Immunocompromised individuals need to take special care.
Check if you are up to date with the vaccinations under the national program, before you leave. Depending on the country of destination one has to take the necessary vaccinations or prophylactic meds. Yellow fever is one of those diseases which many countries ask for a certification from the traveler. Smallpox isn’t really considered nowadays. Vaccines are especially required if you would visit places outside the urban areas. In Italy one must and should be vaccinated for diphtheria and tetanus (DT), polio (IPV) and hepatitis B (Hb).
There are certain countries that are endemic to malaria and it is recommended that you take chemo prophylactic measures specific to that particular species prevalent in the destination nation.
